Julia Titus as Ma Bessie relates the life of Bessie Smith illustrating the story of Bessie’s songs with a full band. It’s a story that takes Bessie from a one room shack in Blue Goose Hollow to being ‘The Empress of the Blues’ touring the country in her own train. Julia Titus has a warm smile and brings an audience into her circle. She jokes with them, sings to them and makes them feel that they have gained a friend. In a short life Bessie went from being ‘dirt poor’ to becoming the highest paid black entertainer in the US and her music spans early jazz and blues right up to the swing era.
A brilliant evening of super blues music with a dramatic twist. In conjunction with the Uckfield Blues & Roots Festival (https://uckfieldbluesandroots.co.uk)
