The Uckfield Grand Prix took place on Sunday 16th July in the car park of TR Fastenings, when 24 teams of 10-11 year olds from local schools raced electric cars. Some 150 children took part, watched by parents and friends. Racing started at 12-15, and continued until the final 5 hours later. The winning team was Holy Cross CE Primary School, with Newick 2 in second place, Nutley third and Rocks Park fourth. Children had built their cars from a kit supplied to the school, thereby learning valuable lessons in technology before they even reached the starting line.

The children’s work before the day was recognised by additional awards. The Paul Page-Mitchell award for the best paddock display of design work was won by Buxted CE Primary, for the effort shown by the children, and the ‘Best Build Portfolio’ award went to Cuckmere House School, recognising the work students had put in throughout the building process. Manor Primary School had dreadful luck on the day with their cars, but did not let that spoil the event. They put their all into the racing, and their efforts were rewarded by the Cornford Cup for Spirit.

The Grand Prix is organised jointly by Uckfield Rotary Club and Uckfield Community Technology College, and put together by a small group of organisers. They are very grateful to sponsors, without whom the event could not take place. These are East Sussex National, who sponsor balaclavas worn by the drivers, Uckfield Motor Services, the suppliers of tyres to line the track, especially SE Tyres, Goldsmith & Allcorn and STS, and Charlie Dimmock, who supplied straw bales to mark pit areas. Tesco supplied free drinks for drivers, which was greatly appreciated, John Rose provided essential equipment, while Uckfield FM’ s Steve Crow contributed splendidly to the commentary on the day. TR Fastenings again allowed the event to be held on their car park. These sponsors are all highly valued, and the Rotary Club, UCTC and the organisers are very grateful for their help.

The Rotary Club Summer Draw was drawn at the Grand Prix, the winner of the £250 first prize being Vicki Lawrence. Winners of all prizes are being notified.
