Friday 8th July 2016

Uckfield Festival started in style with a Youth Bands and Music Showcase, ‘Sounds Like Teen Spirit, at the Civic Centre.  Young rock bands from Uckfield, Lewes and Crowborough gave the audience a night to remember.  Performers were aged between 10 and 17 but the venue had been transformed into the most stunning professional setting because of the top-rate sound equipment provided by local band leader Dave Backley and by the brilliant lighting effects produced from the young members of the Uckfield Community Technical College support group, StarTech.

As well as the main bands, the audience were entertained by a diverse range of performances including Lena and Eliza, two young flute players from Little Horsted Primary School, a much-appreciated drum solo from young Max Timlin and a number of duets and acoustic-style contributions from talented Uckfield performers.

Prizes were award by a panel led by Ray Russell, renowned record producer, composer and guitarist, who encouraged the young audience to pay for music downloads to ensure the continuation of a creative music industry.

The star of the evening was 13-year-old Adam Graham, who won the prize for Best Individual Musician as well as sharing the prize for Most Originality which was awarded to the trio, ‘Brain Storm’ together with 16-year-olds Beth Burchett and Charlie Damazer.  The prize for Best Overall Performance was shared between the dramatic Crowborough band, TN6, and our local 15-year-old pair, Zoe and Andrea.
